It uses popular culture and a host of games to reinforce messages and ensure their relevance to today’s young people. The HCS programme is fun and educational. There is a pressing need for primary school pupils to develop lifelong strategies, which will positively affect their happiness levels and improve their ability to be successful learners. One school saw improved standards across a variety of areas, with a 20% increase in Key Stage 2 SATs results, attributed, by the Headteacher, to an improvement in self-confidence and coping skills of Year 6 pupils. HCS has received positive feedback from existing HCS Schools. It draws on research by academics such as Dr Martin Seligman, a pioneer in the field of positive psychology, and Andrew Oswald, Professor of Economics at the University of Warwick. HCS is developed by former headteachers and industry experts in psychology, motivation, engagement and behaviour change. Sheikh Nahyan said this program intended to establish, "the values of positivity and happiness as a way of life in the UAE". He said happiness was, "a renewable and sustainable asset". The Happiness Cafe is part of a program initiated by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, called the National Program for Happiness and Positivity. He hoped it would create a positive environment in the workplace, allow employees to better release their productive energy, and improve the work environment in the ministry. The cafe was opened by Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak, Minister of Culture and Knowledge Development.
